We are Getting Richer

Government policies play an important role in national economy. A correct policy introduced at the right time could change history and benefit people’s life for a long period of time. Before the Chinese government raised “Reform and Opening up”, national factories stood on most ways in overall national economy. People’s living standards were low and lacking of business activities. In the early 1990’s, Chinese government cut merchandise tax to encourage private-owned business, which was called “tax shelter” policy. Since then, many families started thinking of new ways to get rich. My family was one that got the motivation to set up our business in the period of “Reform and Opening up”, and started much better lives in three ways.

Firstly, my father quit his job and set up a motel near a market place with my supportive mother. My parents were both technical workers working for a big national factory in the early times of 1990’s, which were recognized the most stable job by people. They could keep working there for thirty years without competitive pressure until they retired and get a stable pension, just like my grandpa did. However, my father was the person who was always searching for change and getting rich. When a policy was placed by the government to stimulate private business, my father realized it was a good opportunity. Based on long time preparation, they decided to operate a motel in town. Since then, my family had a different way of living.

Moreover, business went on very well and we got more income. My parents put a lot of effort in this new career. We did not have any weekends since the motel was open. They woke up very early and went home late at night. My mom had less time to cook at home, so most of time we had lunch at the reception room of the motel. Since the owner of the house was my grandpa, they saved a lot of expenses on rent. Furthermore, they just paid less tax to government as to the favorable tax shelter policy. My family got much more annual incomes than ever. We lived in a new big apartment a few years later and my father finally realized his dream of having his own car.

Finally, seeing the change of my family, consequently, more relatives joined in starting a business. My aunt opened a small clothing store at that time and now, it was extended into a textile factory, which cooperates with international companies and does export business. My uncle invested all his savings into a construction business. He started by installing carpet for new houses and then, he owned a construction team working for him to decorate. Now, my uncle is a big boss in charge of decorating for a whole building. They all gained better lives by their brave tries in business.

As you can see, my families are getting richer by the great opportunity in business in the times of “Reform and Opening up”. We held this good opportunity at the right time and improved our living standards. Till now, when our big families gather together, they all like talking about the hard times when they started their business. Meanwhile, I know they appreciate the “tax shelter” policy brought to them, and their brave tries in business. We can say “Reform and Opening up” is a wise choice the Chinese government did. Not only my family, but also the overall national economies benefited a lot from it.
