‘International Money Festival’, ‘It’s monetary fight’, ’Idle my father’, ‘I am free’, and ‘It’s mournful future’. These quotes are the metaphors for an International Monetary Fund, IMF. The quotes also are representing and explaining what was going on at the time when my country, Korea, was in a struggle with its economics in 1997. Korea was getting better and more growing in economic situations. Many companies and factories got bigger and stronger internationally. Therefore, people started to spend money without thinking and getting scared. One day, the most successful company was bankrupt, and that gave us a huge effect to the entire country. The worst situation gave my parents countless sufferer mentally and physically and a chance to build their faiths.
The first effective event happened eleven years ago to my parents, and I was in fourth grade. Of course I did not know what was going on in my country’s economy at all. However, I used to sit next to my parents and watch the news after dinners. I did not remember then it was exactly started, but I heard my parents’ deep breaths. I could recognize there was a something wrong at those times, even though I was a just little kid who desired to have a Barbie Doll. My father had his own factory that made polystyrene, which was included in Styrofoam. He was very passionate about leading and keeping his factory with positive attitudes and thoughts. However, I could feel that he was extremely depressed, even my mom seemed like she was in hurry and scared. Those were the first unusual attitudes that my parents had, which were depression and lose of patience.
Moreover, my father’s younger sister was affected by IMF. She was almost about to lose her factory that my father build for her when she had no job for a long time. She did not have a career as much as my father. Therefore, every bank where she had borrowed money for the factory started to push her to make a payment as soon as possible. Of course there was no way to discharge the debts in a few months. Therefore, my father gave her his hand again, even though he was also in the worst situation. It was an obvious decision because she was my father’s younger sister. My mother was kind of upset at my aunt not because my father helped her, but at her attitude that she did not even try anything for her factory and came to ask my father for his help. I think those times were the hardest and worst time for my parents, especially for my father who had a lovely wife and two adorable daughters. He had to handle his own factory and his sister’s factory which was very stressful works to do.
The hard time did not seem like it was going to be over soon at all. My mother really wanted to help my father at his factory, but she had no idea what to do. I honestly did not think it was that hard for my parents and mu sister who was a junior in high school and was trying to get ready for college. Therefore, my mother started to go to Early Morning Prayer Service at a church. My family was Christian who would go to church on every Sunday and had a fellowship tine with people and came back, and I thought I had to do that on Sunday of course. However, Korea’s economy was going down rapidly and it affected to my father directly, and I guess my mother couldn’t stare and wait at the situation. I saw her a few times reading bible and praying when I got back home from school. Amazingly, she had been changed and she also encouraged her husband in many ways and her children more than before ever. She finally found her patients back in her mind that much. There was no more losing patients and depressions, but a firm belief that they could get over from the worst situation with the word of God.
As you can see, it was the worst time when my parents were suffering mentally and physically, but they finally found something else that very important. Now, my mother became a deacon and always tries to lead my sister and me in a right way with God’s Word and my father starts to consider the Church and God more than just as one of schedule that he had on Sunday. I also learned and grew mentally and physically, and I always try to remember what my parents taught me with the Bible. The IMF was a horrible and terrible happening more that any other, but I believe that the hardest time gave us the chance to earn something very special, a strong belief.
